New developments in materials have changed the contour of the household tub. In two story homes, sometimes lightweight tubs are essential. The first and lightest type of tubs to consider is fiberglass. View bathtub gallery below

Not only are fiberglass bathtubs light, they are one of the most affordable bathtubs available. Of course, as with anything, you will sacrifice quality for the quantity of money spent, and as fiberglass is easily scratched, there will be noticeable wear and tear within 10 to 12 years.

Some manufacturers may apply an acrylic finish for added durability, giving the fiberglass tub longer life, but always check with the company before purchasing a bathtub to determine warranty information, as well as the availability of various coatings.

The next level of lightweight tubs is acrylic. In the mid-price range, solid acrylic bathtubs are known for their ease and flexibility. Most spa tubs are made of shapable acrylic. It is not difficult for a manufacturer to mold acrylic into virtually any shape imaginable, so creative options are available to the consumer.

The heaviest of the bunch, but still much lighter than its old school ancestors, is the reproduction of classic, iron-cast, claw foot tubs. These are porcelain on steel bathtubs. With most modern reproductions made of porcelain on steel, these bathtubs are both durable and pleasing to the eye.

Stone tubs have made a big splash in more affluent homes, as they are beautiful and expensive. They are also difficult to install. So the commitment to this type of tub is quite high. But if you’re up for the cost and effort, there is almost nothing as striking and long-lasting as a stone tub. It’s an investment into your home.

Last but not least, there is a designer school of wooden tubs that can run from moderate to outrageously expensive. From bamboo to oak and pine, the materials are many and varied. We’re not talking about a wooden enclosure for an acrylic or fiberglass but, but an honest-to-goodness tub made out of wood.

They need a bit more care than other tubs, to keep the wood healthy and strong, but they can be among the most beautiful tubs around. If you're looking for something truly different to set your tub apart, check into the organic hipness of wooden tubs.
