You know, the average house isn’t so average anymore. Nope. Take this couple I did some work for recently. They were pretty, shall we say, "progressive" and they actually wanted me to install a room that was like, ahem, a club. Yep. You guessed it. Mirrored walls, a disco ball, a stripper’s pole, comfy couches and a killer sound system.
Hey, it was my time and their dime! And you know what? When it was done, they invited me over to party with them and their peeps. Let's just say that they had some very interesting friends. Anyway, that’s where I met Zach and learned about his dream at-home gym.
Zach's a day trader with a very aggressive streak. He wanted not just a home gym, but a sort of modified version of Fight Club. Zach is an MMA freak.
So we decided to turn his garage into a fight ring. The first thing we did was to take everything off the walls. Luckily they were already fitted with sheet rock and painted. We bought some mats and placed them around the garage on the walls. We did this by hanging them, then adding Velcro to the back to connect them to the walls. These were official, vinyl, six-foot-high judo mats. We put matching mats on the floor so, essentially, we had padded floors and walls.
Then we added our ring.
Most rings are either 18x18 or 20 x 20. Considering that we were dealing with a garage that was 20 x 25, 16 x 16 was about the best we could do.
We could have tried to build our own ring, but Zach really wanted to do it right, so we splurged and went with Balazs, a great little company out of Pennsylvania that makes floor rings. It came with turnbuckles, corner posts and even two corner stools. We put it up in three hours with some of Zach's training buddies.
We dropped in a traditional ring light and it was "Let's get ready to rumble!" In house club rooms and fight rings… that’s just the beginning. Stranger things have been built!
